Most will go dormant during the winter. You can cut them down low to the ground, and they will vigorously grow back during spring.

These grasses are also great for mild winter areas. You just need to trim down during the cool seasonal months.

Winter time is great for splitting these grasses in half. Yes you can actually take them out of the ground and using a sharp knife split them down the middle. You will know have 2 grass clumps that can be planted elsewhere.

Below are some ornamental grasses that will do well in most southwestern states.

Pampas Grass or Cortalderia selloana. This is a fast growing exotic ornamental grass. Usually evergreen in warmer climates. Normal variety grows to about 10ft high and 20ft wide. Should be planted in groups. Has showy spike flower plumes and razor edged leaves (ouch)! Dwarf variety available at your local nursery. Likes full sun and very drought tolerant. Grows best at about 6500 ft. elevation.

Fountain Grass or Pennisetum spp. Most grow about 3ft. tall and about 5ft. wide. Purple fountain grass or Pennisetum alopecuroides is a favorite among southwestern New Mexicans. Nice feathery plumes in the fall. They all like full sun, and good fertilized type of soil. Attractive natural purple color great for any type of landscaping. This type of grass loves the lower elevations of the southwest.

Blue Fescue or Festuca caesia. Nice mounding exotic pale blue grass with ornamental flowers. Can be used as a ground cover. Loves colder climates but will tolerate drought conditions. Likes full sun and or shade. This ornamental grass grows to about 1ft. tall and wide and stays green year round. Ask your local nursery for more advice. Do not confuse with Fescue lawn grass.

Horsetail grass, Indian grass, Horsetail grass, Feather grass, Mexican feather grass, and Sedge grass. These ornamental grasses are excellent as low water plants. Many stay green year round. Call your local nursery for more advice.

Web sites for landscaping/shrubbery/plants?

Hi All!

My husband and I recently bought a house and have been working on remodeling the inside (kitchen, bathrooms etc). When the weather gets warmer we're hoping to be able to get outside and re-do the landscaping. Currently there are large (and overgrown) bushes on either side of our stairs that are an eye sore and need to be replaced.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good web sites that show landscape design ideas, pictures of different types of shrubbery or plants and ideas for mulch or edging stones. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Landscape Design is a wonderful career filled with its artsy elements highlighted with a focal point on color and proper placement of plants and flowers.

A resume example for a Landscape Designer should be anything but plain and ordinary. The key to any good resume is accuracy, up to date personal information and simplification. A Landscape Design Resume needs to be just as tidy, neat and perfect as the landscape the designer puts on paper.

Begin your resume with your headlining information. Be sure to symbolize who you are, where you are located and how the employer will be able to get in contact with you whether it be by snail mail, email, phone or fax. Next it is time to create your opening paraphrase. Be sure to highlight your skills and ideas and add some words that will make your statement stand out above the rest. Such as; Over ten years of experience in the landscape design field, with an eye for coordinating colors and textures into one setting.

You then can proceed to summarize your actual experience by creating a brief bold faced underlined subject matter followed by a small summary of what you did on the job. Try not to repeat duties and responsibilities unless if it is relevant to each job position.

An example of what you could use to explain your work experience would be as follows;

Underwood’s Nursery, Adrian, MI

Head Landscape Designer- 2001 to present.

Created and designed a vast variety of commercial and residential projects including the newly constructed playground at the Christian Family Center, the Hospice garden Park in Downtown Adrian and the City Hall front yard area.

My most recent projects have been residential properties in the new Tecumseh Subdivision called Pines Ridge, and the Clinton Memorial Winter Gardens in Clinton, Michigan.

The above is just an example of information you could use in the experience section of your resume. Hopefully this gives you a general idea of the format that the employer will be looking for.

Making sure to list where you received your education and internship is equally important to have on your resume. If it has been a while since you have attended school, be sure to check the names and locations, as through the years they can move to a new location thus changing their contact information.

Salary information regarding past history is always an option that some people like to have on their resume, I would recommend to steer clear of the subject, as it can come under close and watchful scrutiny under the eyes of a prospective employer.

With implementation of the tips listed above, you are well on your way to utilizing your Landscaping Design skills to have the career you have always wanted.

Nurseries often grow plants in a greenhouse, a building of glass or in plastic tunnels, designed to protect young plants from harsh weather (especially frost), while allowing access to light and ventilation. Modern greenhouse techniques allow for automated control of temperature, ventilation and light and semi-automated watering and feeding. Some also have fold-back roofs to allow “hardening-off” of plants without the need for manual transfer to outdoor beds. 

Most nurseries remain highly labour-intensive. Although some processes have been mechanized and automated, others have not. It remains highly unlikely that all plants treated in the same way at the same time will arrive at the same condition together, so plant care requires observation, judgment and manual dexterity; selection for sale requires comparison and judgement.

A UK nurseryman has estimated (in 2003) that manpower accounts for 70% of his production costs. The largest UK nurseries have moved to minimize labour costs by the use of computer controlled warehousing methods: plants are palletised, allocated to a location and grown on there with little human intervention. Picking merely requires selection of a batch and manual quality control before dispatch.

In other cases, a high loss rate during maturation at a wholesale nursery is accepted for the reduction in detailed plant maintenance costs.  Business is highly seasonal, concentrated in spring and autumn. There is no guarantee that there will be demand for the product – this will be affected by temperature, drought, cheaper foreign competition, fashion, etc.

A wholesale nursery carries these risks and fluctuations each and every growing season.
